FORGIE
Mrs. Anna Forgie, 65, wife of the Rev. James A. Forgie, well know district minister, died June 21, 1944 at the home of her brother-in-law, Harry Forgie, Suterville, Westmoreland County. Her death came suddenly.
Mrs. Forgie was born in Buena Vista, the daughter of Thomas and Hannah Lawton. She had lived in Star Junction, Scenery Hill, Centerville, and Masontown, where Mr. Forgie held pastorates. During the last few years they had lived at California.
Surviving besides her husband are three sons, James, Philadelphia; Ray, of Enola, and Charles E, of Brownsville, advertising manager of the Brownsville Telegraph, a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Barner wife of Raymond T. Barner, supervising principal of Brownsville schools; two sisters, Mrs. Oscar Bennett, Formont, and Mrs. Edith Scales, Suterville; and three brothers, Thomas Lawton, St. Petersburg, Fla; George Lawton, Turtle Creek, and Bert Lawton, Sharon. Eight grandchildren.
WILLOCK
Sarah M. Willock, 80, of Beallsville, died June 20, 1944 at 6 am in her home. She had been in failing health several years
A daughter of Joshua and Mary Martin, she was born July 18, 1863, in Washington. Mrs. Willock was an active member of the Beallsville Presbyterian Church as long as her health permitted.
Surviving are her husband, Charles E. Willock, two daughters. Mrs. Mary Carroll, Beallsville, and Mrs. Luella Clutter, Canonsburg; three granddaughters, Mrs. Beatrice Rodocker, Brownsville; Mrs. Bernice Hale, Provo, Utah; and Mrs. Sara J. McCoy, of St. Louis, Mo. Three great-grandchildren also survive.
GARRETT
Gildroy W. Garrett, of 809 East Maiden Street, died yesterday morning in the Washington Hospital. His death was caused by bronchial pneumonia. He was aged 82 years.
Two sons, Henry and Roy Garrett, of Donora, survive, together with a brother, William Garrett, of Washington, and a sister, Mrs. Austin Amos, of maple Avenue, Washington.
Funeral service will be held in the McDonough funeral home at Beallsville, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, in charge of the Rev. H. Monroe Jenkins, pastor of the Beallsville Methodist Episcopal church. Interment will be in the Beallsville Cemetery.

Dr. George Everett Hastings, 64, a native of Washington county and author of the recent book, “Sally Hastings,” died suddenly Sunday night at his home in Fayetteville, Ark.
Dr. Hastings was born October 27, 1878, in Deemston Borough, a son of Frank L. and Matilda Fulmer Hastings.
Dr. Hastings was graduated from Southwestern State Normal School at California, now California State Teachers College in 1900. He attended Washington and Jefferson College for two years and then went to Princeton, from which he was graduated in 1904. After taking post-graduate work at Columbia University, he received his doctorate from Harvard.
He was employed for a number of years by the Bell Telephone company in Pittsburgh and later taught at Shattuck Military academy, Faribault, Minn. At the time of his death he was dean of the English department at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Ark. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Mary Rudolph Hastings and three sisters, Miss Anna Hastings and Mrs. Thomas Overholt, both of Baden, of Washington county, and Mrs. B. Frank Emery, Washington, PA.

Prominent Washington Woman Succumbs Here
Mrs. George B. Davis, 57, died at the home of her brother, Vincent Brown, 110 Gibson Avenue, at 5 o’clock this morning. She had been a resident of Washington for the past 20 years and was a member of the Nazareth Baptist Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post No. 651.
Mrs. Davis is survived by two sons, Charles and Vincent Brown, both of Washington; one brother, Luther Hudgins of Matthews, VA.; four sisters, Miss Ella Hudgins, Matthews, VA., Mrs. Daisy Twine, Mrs. Lula Short and Mrs. Amanda White, of Newport, R.I.
Friends will be received at the late residence until time for the funeral services, which will be conducted at the Nazareth Baptist Church on Monday at 2 p.m., with the Rev. R. H. Rucker in charge. Burial will be made in Washington Cemetery.

Centerville friends have received word of the death of Dr. Lester H. Bayne, 76, who resided at 788 Cherry Avenue, Long Beach, Calif.
A retired dentist, he was born in Washington County, and moved to Long Beach, Calif., 33 years ago. He had practiced in Centerville, Washington, Scenery Hill, Jefferson and Marianna.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge, 888, and the Neptune Lodge, 619, F & A M and was a past president of the Executive Association. He was graduated from the University of Pennsylvania.
Surviving are his wife, Nora, one daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Fisher, Long Beach; and three sons, James S., Long Beach, Calif.; Dr. Donald Bayne and Capt. Lestor H., Jr., USAF; one sister, Mrs. Essie Breese, Long Beach; three grandsons and one great-grandson.

He leaves his wife, Mary Floyd Woodfill; a daughter, Helen, at home; and the following brothers and sisters; Miss Sally Woodfill, Miss Annie Woodfill, Lee, Charles and will, all of Centerville; Frank of Wilkinsburg, and Ollie of Rochester, N.Y.
Funeral was at the home at 2:30 pm today in charge of the Rev. W. H. Wetzel, pastor of the Beallsville, M.E.C. Church, assisted by the Rev. J. A. Forgie, pastor of the Centerville M.E. Church. Additional services will be in Taylor M.E. Church at 8 pm. Burial will be in Taylor Cemetery.

Centerville Youth Dies Early today
Jesse Yorty Victim of Accidental Shooting at Home
When a shotgun he was carrying to shoot rats was accidentally discharged last evening Jesse Yorty, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Yorty of Centerville and a Telegraph newsboy received the full charge in his left side. He died in the Washington hospital at 4:40 am today.
The boy, with a smaller brother, Raymond, had gone to the rear of their home on Main Street, to shoot rats. Raymond drew away from his brother to watch a fire truck on its way home from a California firemen’s parade. Suddenly he heard the discharge of the shotgun and his brother cry out in pain and turned to see his brother fall writhing to the ground.
The lad was rushed to the Washington hospital where after examination of his wounds no hope was given for his recovery. The slugs from the shotgun had cut his left hand into ribbons and caused a gaping wound in his left side.
Just how the accident occurred no one has been able to learn. The younger brother was the only person near him at the time and was not able to tell how the accident occurred as the gun went off as his attention was drawn to the passing fire truck.
The body was returned to the Yorty home today. Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed.
Jesse had been a faithful newsboy for a number of years, was widely known in the Centerville district.
In addition to his parents he is survived by the following brothers and sisters; George, Raymond, Thelma, Sarah, Dorothy, Vera and Helen.
JONES
Mrs. Olla Gertrude Jones, 61, wife of Harry A. Jones, died at her home in Centerville Borough at 3 am, Sunday, Nov 17, 1940. She had been in ill health for the past three years due to a stroke and last Tuesday she was again stricken.
Mrs. Jones was born Dec 16, 1878 in Centerville Borough. She was a member of Centerville Methodist Church.
Surviving besides her husband, are four daughters; Mrs. Gene Baldwin of Omaha, Neb.; Mrs. C.c. Brooks, of Carmichaels; Mrs. George Sloan, of Richeyville, and Mrs. William Peach of Roscoe; three sons, Clarence Jones, of Moultrie, Fla., and Harry W., and Walter W. Jones, at home, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at the Jones home with the Rev. L. A. Robinson, pastor of Centerville Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in maple Creek Cemetery.

Frank Baker, 60, of 707 Crest Avenue, Charleroi, died in the Allegheny General Hospital this evening at 7 o’clock succumbing after a three weeks’ illness.
Mr. Baker was born near Fredericktown, a son of James and Mary Garrett Baker. He was widely known in Washington County. He had followed the trade of stone mason and brick layer.
Mr. Baker leaves his wife, Mrs. Jennie Baker, and the flowing children; Mrs. Muriel Jones of Charleroi, R.D.1.; Mabel, Helen, Lloyd, Paul and Russell Baker, all at home. Jess Baker, of near Erie is a brother, Mrs. Ora Hill of Centerville, and Mrs. Effie Hill, of Pasadena, California, are sisters.
The body will be brought to the late home. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Charles Ernest Leeper, 57, died at 6:15 pm yesterday at his home, Fredericktown, R. D. 1. He was a son of the late Hiram and Harriet Leeper and was born at Deemston February 10 (?) , 1884.
He leaves his wife, Mabel Wilson Leeper; three sons, Audrey, Fredericktown, R. D. 1.; Glenn, Baltimore and Roger, at home; two daughters, Mrs. Charles Snyder, Beallsville and Evelyn, at home; a brother, Walter, Vestaburg; a sister, Mrs. P. B. Dever, Denbo, and five grandchildren. Two children, Kenneth and Dorothy, are deceased.
Private rites will be at the home tomorrow at 2 pm with the Rev. Mr. Miller, pastor of the Mt. Zion Methodist church, officiating. Burial in Beallsville Cemetery.

Mrs. Jennie Barnard Ward, 69, widow of LeMoyne Ward and native of East Bethlehem township, died early Thursday of a heart ailment in a Charleston, W. Va., hospital.
Mrs. Ward was born near Clarksville, the daughter of Ignatius and Eliza Stintler Barnard. She lived in the Fredericktown section until going to Clay county, W. Va., 25 years ago. For a number of years her husband operated the Fredericktown ferry.
She leaves four sons, George B., Ralph W. Kenneth e., and LeMoyne, Jr., all at home; Mrs. Weidon Harshman, Fredricktown, and a sister, Mrs. Emma Barnard, Clarskville.

Lila C. Wines, 76, formerly of 1041 Park Avenue, died at 1:45 pm Monday, December 25, 1972, in McMurray Hill Manor.
She was born January 27, 1896 in Venice to Scott and Annie Willison [?] Crumm. Her husband Frank K. Wines, died September 3, 1972.
She was head bookkeeper at Mellon National Bank for many years and retired in 1959. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church and the St. Margaret’s Guild of the church. She was a charter member of the Lincoln Chapter, Order of Eastern Star.
Surviving are a son, Donald F. wines, of Washington; a daughter, Mrs. Jack (Jean) Varley, of Ramsey, N.J.; a sister, Mrs. W. L. (Lillian) Claffery, of Washington. And three grandchildren.
A daughter, Dorothy; two sisters, Lela Bemis and Oliver Horner, and a brother, Cyril Crumm, are all deceased.

Florence William Stitt, 74, of 2846 Hillgate Road, Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Brownsville RD 2 died at 10pm Thursday, March 30, 1972, in Mercy Hospital, Columbus, Ohio.
She was the daughter of William and Matilda Watkins Williams.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Wilbur (Irene) Smith, of Columbus, Ohio and Mrs. Edmund (Jean) Schwitters, of Anchorage, Alaska; three brothers, John, of Apache Junction, Arizona; Roger, of Miami, Fla., and David, of Homestead, Fla.; four granddaughters and a great-granddaughter.

HIGGINS
Jane Furie Higgins, 85, of 315 West Maiden Street, Washington, died Wednesday, June 10, in Maybelle Manor Nursing Home.
She was born in Sudersville, March 29, 1885, a daughter of the late James J. and Jeanette Conley Furie. She lived in Washington since 1942, and prior to that was a resident of Charleroi.
Mrs. Higgins was a member of Immaculate Conception Church. She was associated with Morganza, as a matron from 1942 to 1950.
There are no known survivors.
HORNER
Dr. Meyers B. Horner, 77, who served as superintendent of the Washington City School for more than 30 years, died Saturday, August 22, 1970, about noon in Washington Hospital, after a long illness.
Dr. Horner headed the city school system from 1930 until his retirement in 1961 and it was during his tenure that the present Washington High School was built. He lived at 48 Morgan Avenue.
Born February 6, 1893, at Meyersdale, a son of Milton C. and Magdalena Horner, he was reared on a farm and attended a one-room country school. He graduated at the age of 16 from Meyersdale High School and took his first teaching job – also in a one-room school in the Meyersdale area.
His first students were boys of 18 to 20 who attended school during the period in the year when chores at home were the lightest. At the time of his retirement he said that one of the most cherished possessions, which he still kept, was the bell he rang to call the students from recess or to signify the start of school.
After a year there, Dr. Horner entered Juniata College, where he graduated in 1913. He taught at Daleville College in Virginia from 1913 – 1915 and at Juniata from 1915 – 1917.
In August, 1917, he enlisted in the Aviation Section of the U.S. Army signal Corps and became a first lieutenant. He served as adjunct at Wilbur Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio, until his discharge in January, 1919.
He taught at Meyersdale High from 1919 – 1920 and in the summer of 1920 helped conduct an experimental school for U.S. Army illiterates at Camp Upton, L.I. He assisted Dr. Gary Cleveland Myers, author of the The Parent Problem, which appears daily in the Observer-Reporter.
Dr. Horner then served six years as principle at Coraopolis High School, before being named principal at Washington High School in 1926. He became superintendent in 1930.
He received his master’s degree in 1926 from the University of Pittsburgh and a PhD from Pitt in 1938. Washington and Jefferson College awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1938.
Dr. Horner retired from the city schools October 1, 1961, and was succeeded by Dr. Glenn C. Hess.
He became a member of the Washington Hospital Board of Directors in 1934 and was board president from 1945-59. He was appointed trustee emeritus in 1969.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School and was a member of the official board. He was also a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association; a life member of the national Association; a member of the American Association of School Administrators; XI Chapter, Phi Delta Kappa, and a life member of the America Legion. He served on various boards and was president of the WPIAL from 1928-30.
He was past president and lieutenant governor of the Kiwanis Club.
He was married October 12, 1918, at Covington, Ohio, to Lucille Gump, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Hilda, wife of James C. McCreight, of Washington, and Mary Evelyn, wife of Dr. J. Edward McClenathan, of Bethesda, MD.; one brother, Foster G. Horner, of Tamaqua; one sister, Mrs. Cora Bittner, of Rockwood, and seven grandchildren.
Lila C. Wines, 76, formerly of 1041 Park Avenue, died at 1:45 pm Monday, December 25, 1972, in McMurray Hill Manor.
She was born January 27, 1896 in Venice to Scott and Annie Willison [?] Crumm. Her husband Frank K. Wines, died September 3, 1972.
She was head bookkeeper at Mellon National Bank for many years and retired in 1959. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church and the St. Margaret’s Guild of the church. She was a charter member of the Lincoln Chapter, Order of Eastern Star.
Surviving are a son, Donald F. wines, of Washington; a daughter, Mrs. Jack (Jean) Varley, of Ramsey, N.J.; a sister, Mrs. W. L. (Lillian) Claffery, of Washington. And three grandchildren.
A daughter, Dorothy; two sisters, Lela Bemis and Oliver Horner, and a brother, Cyril Crumm, are all deceased.
STITT
Florence William Stitt, 74, of 2846 Hillgate Road, Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Brownsville RD 2 died at 10pm Thursday, March 30, 1972, in Mercy Hospital, Columbus, Ohio.
She was the daughter of William and Matilda Watkins Williams.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Wilbur (Irene) Smith, of Columbus, Ohio and Mrs. Edmund (Jean) Schwitters, of Anchorage, Alaska; three brothers, John, of Apache Junction, Arizona; Roger, of Miami, Fla., and David, of Homestead, Fla.; four granddaughters and a great-granddaughter.
BAKER
Friends of Ernest R. Baker, of 38 Pennsylvania Avenue, California, who died Monday, June 9, 1969, will be received after 2pm. Tuesday in the Caleffie and Greenlief Funeral Home, California. Services will be held at 2 pm Thursday in the United Methodist Church of California in charge of Rev. Leroy Jones. Burial in Highland Cemetery.
HIGGINS
Jane Furie Higgins, 85, of 315 West Maiden Street, Washington, died Wednesday, June 10, in Maybelle Manor Nursing Home.
She was born in Sudersville, March 29, 1885, a daughter of the late James J. and Jeanette Conley Furie. She lived in Washington since 1942, and prior to that was a resident of Charleroi.
Mrs. Higgins was a member of Immaculate Conception Church. She was associated with Morganza, as a matron from 1942 to 1950.
There are no known survivors.
HORNER
Dr. Meyers B. Horner, 77, who served as superintendent of the Washington City School for more than 30 years, died Saturday, August 22, 1970, about noon in Washington Hospital, after a long illness.
Dr. Horner headed the city school system from 1930 until his retirement in 1961 and it was during his tenure that the present Washington High School was built. He lived at 48 Morgan Avenue.
Born February 6, 1893, at Meyersdale, a son of Milton C. and Magdalena Horner, he was reared on a farm and attended a one-room country school. He graduated at the age of 16 from Meyersdale High School and took his first teaching job – also in a one-room school in the Meyersdale area.
His first students were boys of 18 to 20 who attended school during the period in the year when chores at home were the lightest. At the time of his retirement he said that one of the most cherished possessions, which he still kept, was the bell he rang to call the students from recess or to signify the start of school.
After a year there, Dr. Horner entered Juniata College, where he graduated in 1913. He taught at Daleville College in Virginia from 1913 – 1915 and at Juniata from 1915 – 1917.
In August, 1917, he enlisted in the Aviation Section of the U.S. Army signal Corps and became a first lieutenant. He served as adjunct at Wilbur Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio, until his discharge in January, 1919.
He taught at Meyersdale High from 1919 – 1920 and in the summer of 1920 helped conduct an experimental school for U.S. Army illiterates at Camp Upton, L.I. He assisted Dr. Gary Cleveland Myers, author of the The Parent Problem, which appears daily in the Observer-Reporter.
Dr. Horner then served six years as principle at Coraopolis High School, before being named principal at Washington High School in 1926. He became superintendent in 1930.
He received his master’s degree in 1926 from the University of Pittsburgh and a PhD from Pitt in 1938. Washington and Jefferson College awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1938.
Dr. Horner retired from the city schools October 1, 1961, and was succeeded by Dr. Glenn C. Hess.
He became a member of the Washington Hospital Board of Directors in 1934 and was board president from 1945-59. He was appointed trustee emeritus in 1969.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School and was a member of the official board. He was also a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association; a life member of the national Association; a member of the American Association of School Administrators; XI Chapter, Phi Delta Kappa, and a life member of the America Legion. He served on various boards and was president of the WPIAL from 1928-30.
He was past president and lieutenant governor of the Kiwanis Club.
He was married October 12, 1918, at Covington, Ohio, to Lucille Gump, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Hilda, wife of James C. McCreight, of Washington, and Mary Evelyn, wife of Dr. J. Edward McClenathan, of Bethesda, MD.; one brother, Foster G. Horner, of Tamaqua; one sister, Mrs. Cora Bittner, of Rockwood, and seven grandchildren.

William Cassius Grimes, 79, of 217 Fourth Street, California, died at 8:05 am Friday Sept. 27, 1963, in Brownsville General Hospital of a heart ailment, after a short illness.
Mr. Grimes was vice president and manager of the California Office of Western Pennsylvania national Bank at the time of his retirement in 1956. He had been with the bank for a number of years.
He was born July 20, 1884, in Centerville Borough, a son of William s. and Elizabeth Dorsey Grimes. He had resided in California since 1929. He attended California State Teachers College and Bucknell University.
He was a member of California Methodist Church; Beallsville Lodge 237, F&AM; California Hungry Club and California Century Club. He was married May 29, 1930, to Nancy Walters of Lincoln, Neb. who survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Judith E. Beisner, Washington D.C.; one brother, Paul Brownsville, R.D. 2; three sisters, Mrs. J. F. Watkins and Mrs. Harry Wolf, both of Brownsville, R.D.2. And Mrs. Will R. Carothers, Mt. Lebanon and one granddaughter, Amy Lynn Beisner.

Mrs. Lane was born Aug 29, 1895, in West Bethlehem Township, a daughter of James L. and Sadie Barre Grable. She attended Washington schools and was a graduate of Washington High School in the spring class of 1914. She was a member of Second United Presbyterian Church, Washington, and an associate member of the United Church of Christ, Islamorada, Fla. She was also a member of Lincoln Chapter 112, Order of the Eastern Star.
She was married Aug 14, 1914 to T. Alex Lane, who died June 23, 1961. A son, Dr. Robert A. Lane, died April 13, 1963.
Surviving are one granddaughter, Judy, wife of Harry Daunhauer, Plantation, Fla.; two grandsons, Robert A. Lane, U.S. Marine Corps, in Vietnam and William Lane, Plantation, Fla. and several cousins.

Mis Armanella L. (Nell) Stone, of the George Washington Hotel, died Sunday, June 1, 1969, in her home. She had been ill for several months but her death was unexpected.
She was born in Washington, a daughter of Charles L. and Mary Charlton Stone.
Miss Stone attended the East Washington Schools and was a graduate of East Washington High School. Before her retirement in 1957, she was employed by the Citizens National Bank, and later the Mellon National Bank of Washington.
Miss Stone was a member of the Church of the Covenant where she had served on the Board of Deacons. She had also served as treasurer of the YWCA, was on the board of the Salvation Army, and was past president of the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Washington. Miss Stone took an active interest in many civic affairs.
Surviving are one uncle, Robert C. Bennet, of Cambridge, Ohio; one aunt, Mrs. Grace L. Charlton, of Washington, and several cousins.

Clarence (C.O.) Ashbaugh, 666 Donnan Ave, Washington, for many years a member of the Washington School Board, died at 12:10 pm Tuesday, may 7, 1968, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was 66.
He was born Nov 26, 1901, in Canonsburg, a son of the late Charles and Margaret Coslett Ashbaugh, and had been a resident of Washington since childhood.
Mr. Ashbaugh was a graduate of the Washington City Schools and had attended the University of Pittsburgh. He was associated with the Morris Insurance Agency for the past 20 years.
For 14 years he served as a member of the Washington School Board and was elected as president of the board in 1966. He served in that capacity until his retirement from the school board in 1967.
He was a member of Fairhill Manor Christian Church of Washington, the Washington Board of Realtors and Sunset Lodge No. 623, F & AM.
On Nov 12, 1927, he married Hilda Dailey of Washington.
Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Phyllis, wife of Earl Doria of Washington; two granddaughters, Amy Sue and Julie Ann Doria, both of Washington; two nephews, William D. Ashbaugh of Indianapolis, Ind., and James William Ashbaugh of Washington.
McFEELY
Charles E. McFeely, 59, of 656 Donnan Avenue, Washington, was dead on arrival at Washington Hospital at 10:47 pm Wednesday, August 18, 1971. He had been in declining health since 1962, seriously ill the last three months.
He was born December 5, 1911, in Finleyville, a son of William and Anna Crouch McFeely.
A member of Third United Presbyterian Church, he had served as a trustee and at the time of his death was an elder in the church.
Mr. McFeely attended Canonsburg High School.
He was a butcher by trade, having worked for Albert Packing Company. He retired four years ago due to ill health.
August 29, 1937 he married Betty Jane Clemens, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Robert W. McFeely, and a daughter, Sandra Sue McFeely, both at home; three brothers, Harold R. McFeely, Venetia R.D.1., James A. McFeely, Washington, and Chalmer mcFeely, Los Angeles, Calif.; and two sisters, Mabel M. Smith, Oakdale, R.D., and Blanche Kammere, Deale, Md. Preceding him in death was a sister Mildred.

She was born July 8, 1864, in Washington, a daughter of Garrit S. and Victoria Virginia Gray Buchanan.
She was a member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church and had attended Gabby School.
On May 15, 1934, she married Edgar Hill, who died January 10, 1946.
Surviving is one sister, Emma Joy Buchanan, with whom she made her home.
A son, Edward Wayne Hill, died April 28, 1980. Three brothers and three sisters are also deceased.

Lebanon; Miss Mabel m. Hill, New York City; Hubert B. Hill, Hickory R.D. 1; U. Grant Hill, Bentleyville.

Surviving are six nephews, Edward Wayne Hill, Washington, Paul and Roy Hill, Hickory, Wallace Ritchey, Dayton, Ohio, Leslie Hill, Tinton, N.J., and Dale Roach, Oil City; and one niece, Mrs. Gladys Sherril, Phoenix, Ariz.

Mrs. Orpha C. Swihart, 62, wife of Boyd Swihart, of Gastonville, died in the Memorial Hospital, Monogahela, yesterday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Mrs. Swihart had not been in good health and was removed to the hospital yesterday about noon. [April 20, 1938]
A daughter of Demas and Elizabeth [should be Malissa Latta] Latta Hill, Mrs. Swihart was born near Beallsville and was a member of the Beallsville Presbyterian Church.
Besides the husband, two daughters survive, Mrs. Dale Roach of Oil City, and Mrs. Dorothy Rea, of Finleyville. She leaves one grandchild.
The body was removed to the Barr & Shrontz Funeral home, Marianna, but will be returned to her former home tonight, where short services will be held at 1 pm Sunday followed by further services Sunday at 3 pm in the North Ten Mile Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Rice Boyd Swihart, 83, a former resident of Gastonville, died Satutray, September 12, 1959, at 9:10 am at the Garmong Convalescent Home, Oil City.
He was born in Castile May 8, 1876, a son of the late Joseph A. and Elizabeth Zimmeran Swihart, and moved to Oil City about 20 years ago. His wife, Orpha C. Hill Swihart, died in 1938.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Dale Roach and Mrs. Dorothy Rea, both of Oil City, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Hazel Jackson, 84, formerly of Burgettstown and the George Washington Hotel, died Sunday, January 25, 1981 in the Washington Hospital Extended Care Facility.
She was born March 2, 1897, in Florence, a daughter of James and Nancy Stephenson Jackson.
Mrs. Jackson was a member of the Florence United Presbyterian Church and a 50 year member of the Burgettstown Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are a son, Dr. Jay Jackson of Minneapolis, Minn.; two daughters, Dorothy Briscoe of Weirton, W. Va., and Lucille Byrne of Houston; a sister, Bertha Gardner of Weirton, W. Va.; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Oscar W. Jackson, died in 1959. A daughter, Louise Astornia, died in 1980, and a son, Curtiss Jackson, died in 1923.

Mary Helen Engle, 81, of Thomas Campbell Apartments, Washington, died Tuesday, December 29, 1981, in Washington Hospital.
She was born September 7, 1900, in Canton Township, a daughter of Samuel Albert and Lovenia Weirich Davis.
Mrs. Engle was a member of the First Christian Church of Washington where she was past-president of the Christian Women’s Fellowship, former teacher of the Lucy Mounts Sunday school class and a member of the Golden Club.
She was past-president and member emeritus of the Martha Washington Garden Club and a member of Washington Chapter No. 409 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Washington Hospital Auxiliary and Washington Chapter of the AARP.
She attended the McClay School in Canton Township.
On November 23, 1920, she married Robert Glenn Engle, who survives. They recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.
Also surviving are one son, Frederick L. Engle of Washington; four daughters, Mrs. George (Mary Louise) Henderson of Weirton, W. Va., Mrs. Samuel (Betty Jean) Andrew of Weirton w. Va., Mrs. Ronald (Marjorie) Polen of Washington and Mrs. James (Lois) Shaw of Washington; two brother, Ralph Davis and Robert Davis, both of Washington; three sister, Florence Fair and Nell Fleissner, Both of Washington, and Martha Mazzotta of Pittsburgh; 18 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Three sons, Robert Glenn Engle Jr., Donald Edward Engle, and Joseph Harold Engle; one daughter, Helen Marie McCullough; three brothers, William, Samuel and Darsie Davis; and one granddaughter, Sandra Lee Shaw are deceased.
CUMMINS
Helen Pattison Cummins, 76, of 3671 Hispania Place, Village Plaza, Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Washington, died Friday, September 5, 1980, in Sarasota Pavilion Nursing Home following a one-month illness.
She was born June 20, 1904, in Toronto, Ohio, a daughter of William Woods and Sally Porter Pattison.
Mrs. Cummins was a former member of the Church of the Covenant, Washington, and a member of the Church of Palms, Sarasota. She had been a member of the choirs at both churches.
A 1923 graduate of Washington High School, she also attended Washington Seminary.
Her husband, Judge George T. Cummins of the Washington County court of Common Pleas, died August 11, 1963. They had been married on March 22, 1929.
Mrs. Cummins was Past Worthy Matron of Lincoln Chapter 112, Order of the Eastern Star; district deputy for Washington and Greene Counties, O.E.S.; Past Worthy High Priestess, Bethesda Shrine No. 25, White Shrine of Jerusalem; and Past royal Matron of the Order of the Amaranth, Martha Washington Court.
She had been past president of the Washington Quota Club, a former member of the board of the Salvation Army and a member of both the Washington Hospital Auxiliary and Washington County Council of Democratic Women’s Club.
Mrs. Cummins had served as secretary to Pastor Franklin Harkey of the Third United Presbyterian Church of Washington and was choir director until the merger of the Third United Presbyterian Church and the Church of the Covenant.
One brother, Kenneth Pattison, is deceased. She is survived by several cousins.
Hazel Jackson, 84, formerly of Burgettstown and the George Washington Hotel, died Sunday, January 25, 1981 in the Washington Hospital Extended Care Facility.
She was born March 2, 1897, in Florence, a daughter of James and Nancy Stephenson Jackson.
Mrs. Jackson was a member of the Florence United Presbyterian Church and a 50 year member of the Burgettstown Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are a son, Dr. Jay Jackson of Minneapolis, Minn.; two daughters, Dorothy Briscoe of Weirton, W. Va., and Lucille Byrne of Houston; a sister, Bertha Gardner of Weirton, W. Va.; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Oscar W. Jackson, died in 1959. A daughter, Louise Astornia, died in 1980, and a son, Curtiss Jackson, died in 1923.

David B. Strott., 52, of Lakewood, Colo., died Monday, April 21, 1980, at Louviers, Col., as a result of an accident.
Born January 11, 1928, in Washington, he was the son of A.W.T. Strott Sr. of Washington and the late Ruth L. Strott.
Mr. Strott was reared and educated in Pennsylvania and received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Miami in Florida. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
In Claysville, he married the former Jean McCullough on June 16, 1951. They moved to Colorado in 1966.
At the time of his death Mr. Strott was plant manager for Molycorp, Inc., in Louviers, Colo.
Surviving, in addition to his father who resides in Washington, and his wife, are two sons and two daughters, David B. Strott Jr., Dane Kit Strott, Jean Elizabeth Strott and Jan Christian Strott, all of Lakewood, Colo.; and one granddaughter, Jessica Lynn Strott.
Also surviving are one sister and three brothers; Leola M. Sheffler of Granville, Ohio; Dr. Charles A. Strott of Rockville, MD., A. W. Ted Strott Jr. and S.S.G. Richard M. Strott, both of Washington.
Services will be held at 1 pm Thursday, April 24, at the St. Andrew United Presbyterian Church, Denver, Colo., with burial in Fort Logan national Cemetery, Denver.

Penn State Great Dexter Very Dies
Dexter W. Very, one of the greatest players in the early days of Penn State University football, and a resident of Washington for 25 years, died Saturday, Sept 27, in State college.
Very, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, would have observed his 91st birthday Nov 27. He played at Penn State from 1909 through 1912 starting every game at right end on offense and defense. He was named on several All-American teams as the Nittany Lions compiled a 26-2-4 record. He was named to the College Hall of Fame in 1976.
In 1912, when Penn State was undefeated and untied in eight games, Very caught eight passes for 187 yards, scored nine touchdowns and made 240 yards on kick returns. He also ran the end around play 17 times for 234 yards.
That year, although he was overlooked for the second year in a row by Walter Camp, at that time selector of the most prestigious All-America team, and placed on his second squad. Bery was rated by seven other authorities in New York, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Scranton and was almost a unanimous All-East selection.
Penn State had compiled an 8-0-1 record in 1911 when Very served as team captain.
Born in 1889 in Susquehanna County, he played his first competitive football at Soldiers’ Orphan Industrial School at Scotland, PA. At Penn State, he also played on the soccer team and was an outstanding wrestler in the 158-pound division. He won both 175-pound and heavyweight titles in the AAU tournament in Atlantic City, N.J., in 1917.
He was an active member of the Washington Kiwanis Club while living in the city.
Very was the last surviving member of coach Bill Hollenback’s undefeated and untied Penn State team, whose record stood until 1968.
He expressed no desire to play or officiate in professional football but was active for many years as a college and high school official. His major assignments included several Army-Navy games and the 1933 Rose Bowl contest between Pitt and Southern California.

John M. Olshock, 91, of the Beallsville area, died at 1:15 pm Saturday, January 24, 1981, in Brownsville Hospital.
He was born May 14, 1889, in Austria, a son of John and Mildred M. Olshock.
Mr. Olshock was a Protestant. He was a retired employee of Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. He farmed in Deemston Borough for many years.
On May 17, 1915, he married Anna Franks, who survives along with one son, John M. Olshock of Tulsa, Okla.; and daughter, Anne, wife of John D. Cleaver of Richeyville; two grandsons, John T. Olshock of Washington and Dr. Richard C. Olshock of Denver, Col,; one great-grandson; and one great-granddaughter.
